Kanunda & Emu Flats Railway

By Ken House

The K&EF takes up half of our double garage. It represents a fictional 30-km. section of the south line somewhere between Adelaide and the Victorian border. The fiddle yard represents both ends of the line, Cooper being the end nearest Adelaide. After leaving Cooper the first town is Kanunda the largest town on the modelled section. As well as having a number of industries trains for the branch lines to Maranaldo and Myrtle.

Springs are made up here. Next is Wooldowie at typical small South Aussie town with goods shed, stock pens, silo and fruit packing shed. After passing through Jimba Jimba Junction Emu Flat is reached another small town with goods shed, stock pen and silo. Penstone Quarry is shunted from Emu Flat. The line then goes on to Foster at the Victorian End (Staging).

The era modelled is the early 1980's, allowing Australian National with brake vans and V-Line engines running through. There were still a lot of vehicles and engines still in SAR and VR liveries around.

Monthly operating sessions are held using a 7 to 1 fast clock and car cards and waybills. The crew usually consists of Controller, Fiddle yard operator (hostler), two mainline crews, and a shunt crew at Kanunda.

Control is by a Lenz compact DCC set with four walk around throttles as well as the master unit. A 5 amp LV102 booster provides plenty of power. The layout is divided into three power districts using an NCE EB3 circuit breaker.
